Multinodular goitre
The processes involved in the development of the third of the main types of goitre i.e. multinodular goitre, are more difficult to comprehend.

Multinodular goitre is typically more prevalent in females and in the elderly and has some genetical background. Over the years an increasing number of areas of the thyroid gland gradually become abnormal with irregular or nodular growth. The abnormal areas may appear hyper- or hypofunctioning on scintigraphy.
