A new Editor-in-Chief of Thyroid International, Dr Peter Smyth of University College Dublin (UCD), Dublin, Ireland has been appointed from Jan 1st 2005.
Peter Smyth replaces Georg Hennemann and Eric Krenning of Rotterdam whose many years of dedicated service are gratefully acknowledged. It is intended that Thyroid International will continue to provide practitioners in thyroidology with expert reviews as well as insights into new developments in the diagnosis and therapy of thyroid diseases.
Peter Smyth graduated in biochemistry from University College Dublin (UCD) and did postgraduate studies leading to a master’s degree in Clinical Biochemistry from Trinity College, Dublin before returning to UCD from which he gained the degree of PhD in Endocrinology. He subsequently undertook postgraduate training at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, London, UK and the Medical University of Lübeck, Germany. Appointed to the academic staff of UCD in 1978, he is now Senior Lecturer in Medicine and Director of the Endocrine Laboratory. Peter Smyth is a long-term member and regular presenter at the ETA, ATA and BTA and is a past President of the Irish Endocrine Society. His major research interests have always been in the field of thyroidology with particular reference to thyroid stimulators, iodine deficiency disorders, thyroid disease in pregnancy as well as the association of thyroid disease with breast cancer. He represents Ireland on ICCIDD.
